The committee's 10 Democrats have stated their objection to Pompeo's nomination by President Donald Trump, as has Republican Sen.

"The Dems will not approve hundreds of good people, including the Ambassador to Germany".

Trump lashed out Monday morning on Twitter, leaving no doubt that he plans to stand by his decision to pick Pompeo, the current Central Intelligence Agency director, to fill the departed Rex Tillerson's shoes. "The left, the base on the Democratic side abhors the president and I realize many of them just don't want to do anything that shows a proxy of support for Trump by voting for his secretary of state", Corker said.

Marc Short, the White House legislative director, said recent weeks have been "incredibly disheartening" as he has had private conversations with Democrats who say Pompeo is qualified but will not vote for him because of political considerations.

Pressure is mounting on senators from both sides. All three are up for re-election in states President Donald Trump won in 2016. "Susan Collins, R-Maine, said Sunday on 'Meet the Press" on NBC. Dianne Feinstein of California, Tim Kaine of Virginia, Brian Schatz of Hawaii and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire.

Pompeo "would be branded the only secretary of State ever rejected by the committee, "USA Today's board wrote".

Pompeo needs 51 votes to be confirmed by the full Senate to succeed Rex Tillerson, who was ousted in March - and with Paul's opposition and Sen.

'I do not make this decision lightly or without reservations, ' Coons said in a statement Friday. "I sense a certain disdain for diplomacy in Mike Pompeo that I believe disqualifies him from being our next senior diplomat". But Democrats have assailed Pompeo for a record of bellicose statements which they say are at odds with his prospective job as the top USA diplomat, and also have cited anti-Muslim and anti-LGBTQ statements he has made in the past.
