"It's much more about personal relations, because I know how much value [the North Koreans] put into this", said Mickey Bergman, a veteran negotiator with North Koreans and vice president of the Richardson Center for Global Engagement, a nonprofit organization dedicated to securing the release of political prisoners around the world.

While Trump has put great importance on sealing a nuclear deal with North Korea, he has bucked traditional USA foreign policy by alienating America's European and NATO allies. "As we move to adjust to the political situation in the face of USA hegemonism, I am willing to exchange detailed and in-depth opinions with your leadership and hope to do so moving forward", Kim told Sergey Lavrov.

Kim Yong Chol was greeted Friday by White House chief of staff John Kelly, who brought him inside the White House to meet President Donald Trump.

The adversaries are eying the first summit between the US and the North after six decades of hostility.

"Our secretary of state is having very good meetings".

"A letter is going to be delivered to me from Kim Jong Un", Trump told press Thursday morning.

Cheong Wa Dae confirmed Wednesday it had sent an official to Singapore to prepare for Moon's official visit to the city state in July, but it triggered speculation that Seoul may be preparing for a three-way summit between the two Koreas and the US. But Trump himself has appeared to relent somewhat in recent days on the timetable for denuclearization, suggesting he would be open to North Korea denuclearizing in phases.

North Korea's will for the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula remains "unchanged, consistent and fixed", said leader Kim Jong Un, according to the North's state news agency on Friday.

The United States has been demanding that North Korea abandon its nuclear weapons program amid reports that it is close to being able to launch a nuclear-tipped missile capable of reaching the United States.

Despite having a border with North Korea and relatively cordial relations that Putin has seemed to want to develop further, Russian Federation has kept a surprisingly low profile as Kim has emerged onto the world stage this year, meeting twice with Chinese President Xi Jinping and South Korean President Moon Jae-in. "Hopefully we will have a meeting on the (June) 12th", he said.

"The potential summit... presents DPRK with a great opportunity to achieve security and economic prosperity", Pompeo said on Twitter on Thursday, referring to North Korea by the initials of its official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

US-ally South Korea and North Korea have technically been at war for decades, even though the Korean War's military combat ended in 1953 because a peace agreement was never signed.

Experts agree that a meeting between Kim and Trump would legitimize a pariah nation and grant North Korea a long-term wish.

Trump then said on Friday that his administration remained in contact with North Korea and that the June 12 summit meeting with Kim Jong-un might still take place. The last official of his stature to visit the United States was Jo Myong Rok, the late first vice chairman of the National Defense Commission, who visited Washington in 2000, South Korea's Unification Ministry said.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met top North Korean official Kim Yong Chol for dinner in Manhattan, New York.

In Moscow, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was too early to know whether there would be a Putin-Kim meeting in Russian Federation. Trump had called it off last week in response to threatening rhetoric from the DPRK.
