United States officials were quoted as saying that the two leaders could spend the first two hours alone with translators but not advisors. The official was not authorized to speak publicly about internal deliberations and insisted on anonymity.

Speaking as he met with Singapore's prime minister Lee Hsien Loong on Monday for lunch, Trump said: "We have a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow and I think things can work out very nicely".

The summit would discuss "building a permanent and durable peacekeeping mechanism on the Korean Peninsula, the issue of realising denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula" and other issues "as required by the changed era".

The report notes the summit is being held "under the great attention and expectation of the whole world".

The social media platform has released various hashtags for the historic summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders says the U.S. ambassador to the Philippines, who has taken the lead on policy negotiations with the North, will hold a working group with a North Korean delegation at 10 a.m. Monday local time, or 10 p.m. Sunday on the U.S. East Coast.

Earlier in the week, Trump also said he has done little preparation for the meeting, noting that the meeting would be all about "attitude".

When Trump and Kim meet on the resort island of Sentosa on Tuesday they will be making history even before they start.

Kim and Trump both arrived in Singapore a few hours apart on Sunday.

Trump, 71, landed at Paya Lebar Airbase on board Air Force One after cutting short his time at the G7 summit in Canada.

Past year the North carried out what was by far its most powerful nuclear test to date and launched a flurry of missiles - including two over Japan - while Trump threatened Pyongyang with "fire and fury" and Kim dubbed him a "mentally deranged US dotard".

"Substantive and detailed meetings in #Singapore today", Pompeo wrote on Twitter, along with photos of Sung Kim and North Korean officials at the negotiating table.

The tests came amid a campaign of "maximum pressure", led by the United States, that tightened economic sanctions against North Korea and raised the possibility of military action.

But critics have warned that the meeting risks being largely light on substance considering what is believed to be a wide gap between the USA and the North on the denuclearization issue. It will be the first ever meeting between a sitting US President and North Korean leader. Francis said he wanted yet again to send "a special thought in friendship and prayer" to the beloved Korean people. Kim Yong Chol, the North Korean leader's right-hand man, and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Choe Son Hui were also included in the entourage.

Kim smiled broadly in the meeting Sunday evening.

"The entire world is watching the historic summit between [North Korea] and the United States of America, and thanks to your honest efforts. we were able to complete the preparations for the historic summit", Kim told Lee through an interpreter.

Security around Kim's hotel was extremely tight and guests were prohibited from going in and out, hours before Kim's black Mercedes Benz limousine cruised in.
