Manafort jailed over witnesses

Trump has sought to distance his campaign and himself from Manafort.

He was booked into the Northern Neck Regional Jail at 8:22 p.m. ET Friday night.

Jailing Manafort gives Special Counsel Robert Mueller more leverage as Manafort weighs whether to cooperate and spill any secrets he knows about Trump and the campaign.

Manafort was booked into the Northern Neck Regional Jail in Warsaw, Virginia.

Westling did not propose adding any conditions to Manafort's house arrest, only asking that the judge clarify whom he was or wasn't allowed to contact.

Manafort is charged with conspiracy against the United States, conspiracy to launder money, unregistered agent of a foreign principal, false and misleading FARA statements, and false statements, in addition to the obstruction charge.

Judge Amy Berman Jackson revoked Manafort's bail over claims he was tampering with witnesses in the case against him brought by special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating possible collusion between Trump's 2016 election campaign and Russian Federation.

US President Donald Trump speaks to reporters on the North Lawn of the White House on June 15, 2018.

Manafort's trial is now scheduled for September. That would be standard for a defendant credibly accused of witness tampering while on bail, especially since - as Berman quipped - she can't solve the problem merely by seizing Manafort's cell phone. "I can't take his cellphone", she said of Manafort.

Last week, prosecutors asked the judge to tighten the restrictions on Manafort or send him to jail as a result of his alleged efforts to shape the accounts of two men who advised on the Ukraine-focused public relations campaign - Alan Friedman and Eckart Sager.

Now he is going to jail, giving special counsel Robert Mueller the maximum possible leverage to flip the longtime political operator against the U.S. president.

"Very unfair!" The president referred incorrectly to Manafort's pre-trial detention as a "tough sentence".

No one on the campaign, including Manafort, has been charged with a crime directly related to Russian attempts to sway the election.

Manafort also entered a not guilty plea to two additional charges levied against him last week, for witness tampering and conspiracy to obstruct justice.

Remind me again, why is Manafort on trial?

Three US marshals led Manafort out of the courtroom into the prisoner holding area immediately after the judge's ruling, CNN reported.

Kilimnik, who worked for Manafort in Ukraine, is believed to also be the Person A in the document filed in March by the special counsel that said former Trump campaign aide Rick Gates was talking to a former Russian intelligence officer before the election, a fact known to Gates at the time.

Later, Trump took to Twitter, writing "Didn't know Manafort was the head of the Mob".

None of the charges against them relate to alleged collusion with Russian Federation. "He worked for me, what, 49 days or something". Domin said that at least one witness said Manafort tried to influence or "coach" the story on lobbying methods and practices.
