Police say the attack targeted children attending a 3-year-old girl's birthday party.

Boise Mayor David Bieter made the following statement Sunday regarding last night's knife attack at the Wylie Street Station Apartments: "Last night's horrific attack does not represent Boise". She was one of nine people injured in the stabbing, including six children.

"It's a single, evil individual who attacked people with no provocation that we're aware of", Bones said.

He was not a refugee himself but had been staying with an acquaintance for a few days, police chief Bill Bones told a news conference. Three adults who tried to save the children were also hurt.

They found victims in the parking lot and inside the apartment complex.

Timmy Kinner, 30, has been arrested in connection with the attack that saw numerous kids injured.

"Nine members of our community have been stabbed and laid injured". "Kinner attacked, targeting the children initially". The police chief did not know if Kinner had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

Police are investigating possible motives in the attack.

"We saw a killer".

However an Ada County Judge ordered that he be appointed a public defender. It is believed he was asked to leave the apartment complex the day before the incident and returned to the complex the following day to carry out the attack.

"And then we ran to the closet", Fathi said.

Ada County Prosecutor Jan Bennetts declined to say after Kinner's hearing whether her office will seek the death penalty, but described the stabbing the worst mass-casualty case she had dealt with in her almost 24-year tenure as a prosecutor. "They're victims from their past homes who fled violence from Syria, Iraq, and Ethiopia", Bones said.

"You can imagine this is a very tight-knit community here in this apartment complex", Bones said Saturday night.

The complex houses many resettled refugee families, but Kinner is not a refugee. On Sunday, colorful bouquets had been placed just outside the crime-scene tape.

When police arrived, Bones said, there were bodies strewn across the whole apartment complex, including the street and the walkways.

The suspect had recently stayed at the apartment complex but was asked to leave Friday over bad behavior, Bones said.

News of the attack left Boise's refugee community and supporters reeling, and several online fundraisers were started to help victims. "Please keep them and their families in your thoughts and prayers".
