The key US trade ally said the countermeasures will remain in effect until the Trump administration limits its trade restrictions on its goods.

The president's tweet came as the US faces escalating trade disputes across the world, including with key USA allies, over the Trump administration's tariffs.

"We've been very nice to Canada for many years, and they've taken advantage of that", Sanders said.

In the Fox News interview, Trump said he proposed to his G7 partners at last month's summit in Quebec that they remove all trade-related barriers and taxes.
