As expected, Verizon is launching fixed 5G services in four cities starting October 1.

We'll see if the wait for 5G puts a damper on new mobile phone sales in the short term, although wireless service providers and other phone sellers are not likely to suggest waiting.

"First On 5G' Members get early access to Verizon 5G Home and are first in line for new services, including 5G mobility", said Tami Erwin, Verizon's wireless operations leader.

After the free period ends, the service will cost $50 per month for Verizon Wireless subscribers or $70 per month for non-subscribers.

Verizon offers 5G Home in four cities in the initial phase of the launch: parts of Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles and Sacramento. According to Verizon, peak speeds can reach close to 1Gbps. 5G Home is a product that Verizon is going to be offering - and it goes up for pre-order this Thursday - which will allow customers to take advantage of this 5G network in those cities.

Verizon has been additionally improving its LTE networks, in October adding Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (Massive MIMO) technology across its wireless network in Irvine, California, increasing network capacity and speeds for customers in partnership with Ericsson.

It will be available only in four cities to begin with.

Though Verizon's 5G commercial service is not the true 5G mobile connectivity that the company promised in December a year ago, it emphasized that the 5G Home service is constructed on its proprietary 5G TF standard.

"5G is here", said Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg. In either case, that's less expensive than most services that claim to offer gigabit speeds.

Houston is the first city in Texas to get the service.

The sign-up package also includes three free months of YouTube TV, as well as a choice of a free Apple TV 4K or Chromecast Ultra streaming device. Additionally, Verizon will not be putting any data cap on the plan.

The pricing will be inclusive of all taxes and fees and does not come with any contractual terms unlike smartphone plans. The major difference with 5G is that it's much faster and can be applied outside of mobile uses.
