Mourinho demands Man Utd make public show of support

Not for the title, but Mourinho's tenure at Old Trafford.

A minute before the final whistle, the Portuguese had looked left to see the Stretford End arising.

"This is new, it makes me not just a better manager but even a better person".

It led to a grandstand finish and Sanchez heading home in the 90th minute to end a four-game winless run and give the club a shot in the arm at a time when background backbiting was compounding poor performances.

Even the three players who dug Mourinho out of the biggest of holes - Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez - have had their issues with the manager.

They are always one bad pass away from being substituted, one caustic comment from public humiliation.

However, things were bound to get tougher for Newcastle and so it proved, as Mourinho also brought on Fellaini and Sanchez, the £100m worth of subs proving the difference.

"It's ridiculous talk to say they don't play for the manager, they play for the club".

Mourinho reacted quickly and replaced Eric Bailly with Mata after just 18 minutes but the momentum was well and truly with Newcastle. "To some extent, yeah, we are but it was an important result because they had to win after all the reports of Mourinho leaving".

"Mourinho didn't need to dig out individuals after the game".

The report adds that the former Real Madrid manager has been made the favourite to become the manager at Old Trafford, should the board decide to remove Mourinho from the job. "I don't see how one good 45 minutes can get rid of all the huge issues that are quite clearly there".

"What I asked the players is to give absolutely everything". I don't want that, and if I could tell them to not do it, I would, because it is not about me. This is not about me, this is about the football club they love.

"And that's what we did in the second half". I'm very happy for the team, for us, but especially for the fans, ' he said.

Presuming he is still in charge, Mourinho returns to Chelsea after the worldwide break, where he has lost in all three visits as United manager, with no goals scored.

While the grand old stadium was rocking, Mourinho barely reacted to Sanchez's victor.

"Normally it happens if a team-mate is injured, but today we needed something", Mata said of his early introduction. "They (Man United) changed and put on top class players".

"We started nervous (ly), the team in my opinion didn't cope well with the pressure of the man-hunting".
