Sooners in the playoff, will face Alabama in Orange Bowl

The Sooners (12-1) defeated Texas to win the Big 12 title on Saturday. But that put all eyes on the SEC Championship between No. 1 Alabama and No. 4 Georgia.

The Alabama Crimson Tide came back from a 14-point deficit to knock off Georgia Saturday, by a score of 35-28.

Alabama and Oklahoma are headed to the Orange Bowl, and a semifinal showdown in the College Football Playoff.

Error! There was an error processing your request. The big debate over the last 24 hours was between the Sooners, Georgia and Big Ten champion Ohio State, but the committee ultimately ruled in favor of the Big 12 champs.

The Crimson Tide opened as 14-point favorites over the Sooners in their December 29 showdown at the Orange Bowl in Miami Gardens, Florida.

The other three teams clinched their spots with victories in their respective conference championship games. Alabama and Clemson are the third and fourth teams to be double-digit favorites in a playoff game, semifinal or final.

The Bulldogs also did their part to help Bama. Hurts did the rest, capping the game-winning drive with a 16-yard quarterback sneak. Alabama's Nick Saban called Georgia "one of the best four teams in the country", and said he didn't want to play the Bulldogs again.

It could be argued that Georgia still deserved to be in the playoff, given they were the only team to put up a scrap against Bama, but it was always going to be hard for Georgia to get into the playoff without an SEC title.

- UGA's loss to Alabama in the Southeastern Conference championship has cost the Dawgs dearly. Notre Dame is the first independent team to make the playoff. The LSU Tigers beat the Bulldogs by 20 in October.
