The Bird Box Challenge wallowed somewhere in between being not-a-meme and a meme-in-embryonic-state earlier this month when Netflix tweeted a warning to its users not to engage in this unsafe activity.

The latest viral challenge is responsible for a crash on a street in Layton, Utah, police said this week.

Additional interviews later revealed that the teen was attempting the viral media challenge inspired by Netflix's hit December flick, Bird Box, starring Sandra Bullock, in which characters must cover their eyes to prevent themselves from going mad and killing themselves.

The Layton Police Department tweeted two photos of the crash, which they said occurred Monday. One YouTube star also filmed himself driving while blindfolded.

She had allegedly pulled a beanie over her eyes as part of the challenge, before losing control of her auto and smashing into another driver, a light pole and a sound barrier. But she may face reckless driving charges after she and a 16 year-old passenger allegedly pulled their beanies over their eyes and attempted to drive down a local highway.

Last week Netflix warned fans not to attempt the challenge.

"It's just inexcusable to do something as risky as this, not only to yourself but everyone else on the road", said police Lt Travis Lyman, quoted by KSL.com.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the Layton, Utah, crash, a representative at the police department told CBS News.

The streamer previously issued a warning against participating in the "Bird Box Challenge", which involves performing often unsafe stunts while blindfolded.
