The movies is an 1989 romantic comedy that follows two characters, Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg
Ryan), through a series of chance meetings. It tries to answer the quetion of whether men and women can ever be ‘just friends’.
The characters first share a cross country trip to new york where Sally is appalled by the obnoxious behaviour of Harry.
Harry on the other hand makes it clear that he finds her attractive and states his belief that men and women cannot be friends because the sex part always comes in the way. Especially if the woman is attractive. They part with the knowledge they can’t be friends. Ten years later they meet in a book shop. They are older and wiser. They start a strong platonic relationship where they share everything about themselves. This will eventually shift to a romantic relationship two years later.
Though the movie is set in the eighty’s, the concepts are still relevant today.
The film talks about high maintenance women, divorce, single hood, friendship, women faking organisms and dating married men. Basically, everything that affects our everyday lives today.
It is a fantastic movie to watch with a new flame or just when you are feeling mushy. A timeless movie guaranteed to keep you glued to your seat as it speaks to you as well as for you.
If you are single or friendzoned, you absolutely have to watch it!
Thumbs up :Though the movie is set in the eighty’s, ( it came out in 1989) the concepts are still relevant today. It’s one of those timeless movies that will keep you glued to your seat.
Thumbs down: There are some instances of sexism and chauvism potrayed in the movie. There is nothing to be done as was released in 1989.
I give it a 4 out of 5 stars
